Furniture benefits from cyber "shelf space" - Home Goods & House Wares

DSN Retailing Today, April 7, 2003

JCPenney isn't the only one blowing out furniture on its Web site, as all three major discounters are offering expanded furniture assortments online.

Target, for example, builds on its office furniture assortment online as well as some other selections, such as glider/rockers. While Kmart has been selling futon sofa beds for some time-- generally offering one SKU on the sales floor--it is offering five futon sofa beds online at price points ranging from $99.99 to $159.99. Unlike the store, the Kmart.com futon frames don't come with mattresses. Kmart offered an array of futon mattresses on its site. Prices there ranged from $79.99 to $129.99.

Not only does Kmart offer bigger selections in products available in store, it also offers whole new furniture categories on the Web. It didn't sell upholstered furniture in Middle Village, N.Y., but the site offers leather sets ranging from $2,099.99 to $3,299.99. Wal-Mart also sells upholstered furniture online, recently offering five sofa-and-loveseat combinations for prices ranging from $1,072 to $1,564.
