Storage is on 'site' at mid-tier - Home Goods & Housewares - Brief Article

DSN Retailing Today, April 21, 2003

Space often runs short on showroom floors, limiting the depth of product that can be mechandised to consumers. The Internet, on the other hand, allows retailers to create virtually infinite space in which to expand product lines. Until recently, mid-tier operators have been marginal players in storage; then, online operations gave them a chance to be significant players.

JCPenney sees storage as a segment with significant possibilities in e-commerce. The company's Web site offers an elaborate consumer guide dubbed "Storage Solutions" that is designed to help Web customers find the right products to conquer clutter and get organized.

JCPenney offers storage items under several different links, including bath, garage and closet--where the assortment includes Sauder Woodworking's QBits with elements priced between $6.99 and $49.99. The "On the Go" link even leads to an array of organizational and emergency items for the car.

Sears also features an array of garment/closet storage products on its Web site, including a closet organizing assortment starting from $19.99. Also included is a starter closet that can be mounted anywhere two walls adjoin and includes a 32-inch metal hanging rod, a storage shelf above, three adjustable, shelves and one drawer with nylon drawer glides and stops, with prices recently marked down to $69.99 from $99.99. Some assembly is required. The top priced item in the selection is a 229.99 combination wardrobe and storage closet.
