Philips Electronics announced it was eliminating 1,600 jobs in its semiconductor unit and plans to close a factory in the United States in response to continued weak demand for computer chips. Closing the San Antonio facility comes just several months after the company shuttered smaller facility in Albuquerque, N.M.
