Navy Hopes Windows Is the Smart Choice - Government Activity

ENT, Sept 20, 2000 by Ted Williams

"The 2000 platform is more secure and a lot more scaleable than anything we've produced in the past," Williamson says. "It's important for it to be on par with Unix-based systems in terms or availability and reliability, and we think we're there."

As for past systems failures on Naval vessels, Williamson points out that the Smart Ship program can be viewed as a learning experience.

"The CVN 77 program is different from Smart Ship in that Smart Ship broke the ice as the prototype," Williamson says. "It was more an experiment, really tapping into an unknown environment. It was taking the better business practices applied in the commercial seagoing business to see if that had validity on this level. The concept has proved positive."
