Microsoft Leads Web Application Server Market - Company Business and Marketing - Brief Article

ENT, Nov 3, 1999

Microsoft Corp. holds a commanding lead in the Web application server market with its Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) and Site Server, according to results from a study by Zona Research Inc. (www.zonaresearch.com). The Zona Enterprise Usage Study of 123 IT executives indicates that 49 use Site Server and 43 use MTS.

Zona analysts say the reason for the big share is that large-scale Web applications are still in the early stages, and companies so far have not needed scalable application servers, such as those from Bluestone Software Inc. (www. bluestone.com) and BEA Systems Inc. (www.beasys.com).

Another reason for the lopsided results of the study, according to Zona, is that administrators explore the option of MTS and Site Server because of an already widespread adoption of Windows NT for Web connection servers. Oracle Corp. and Netscape also had good showings in the study: Oracle held 32 and Netscape was used by 16.
