The battle over red-wolf recovery in North Carolina continues as opponents seek to overturn protections for the animals on private land. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to decide early this year whether to list the Canada lynx under the Endangered Species Act. Because the creature is rarely seen, scientists in a number of states, including Montana, Utah, and Oregon, have been combing the landscape for evidence of the animals, such as traces of fur, to better determine their prevalence.... Pressure is growing on the Mitsubishi Corporation to reconsider building an additional salt factory near the Laguna San Ignacio in Baja California, Mexico, breeding waters for gray whales. In October, 15 American mutual funds announced a boycott of the company to protest the project.... Criminal charges could be forthcoming in the poisoning of 27,000 birds, most of them red-winged blackbirds, on a farm in Mascoutah, Illinois. Lab tests showed that the birds ate grain tainted with insecticide. "Someone apparently wanted to eliminate a population that was perceived to be a nuisance," says Tim Schweizer of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
