Twenty-one chimpanzees associated with the U.S. space program have been welcomed into the Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care's sanctuary in Saint Lucie County, Florida. The chimps, descendants of animals used in the Mercury space missions, had been held in research laboratories years after the Air Force had no further use for them.

Their retirement to the sanctuary was the fruit of several years' effort by researcher Jane Goodall and others....
