AORN Journal, July, 2000

40 YEARS AGO IN OR NURSING

An article in the July/August 1960 OR Nursing outlines five factors to be considered when planning an OR suite: good patient care, infection control, control of personnel, convenient handling of materials, and efficiency of operation. * A report in "Clinical Briefs" claims people under stress are apt to do things the way they first learned them, even if it is more difficult than using newly learned methods. * "Behind the OR Mask" salutes an AORN member who will provide medical treatment and education aboard a traveling navy ship in project "Hope"--part of President Eisenhower's new cooperative health program.

30 YEARS AGO IN THE AORN JOURNAL

In the July 1970 AORN Journal, AORN President Betty J. Thomas, RN, announces the appointment of Jerry G. Peers, RN, as the new AORN Executive Director. * One article describes a health sciences center's student volunteer program designed to introduce high school students to careers in biomedical sciences. * Another article describes seven approaches nurses and physicians can take to reduce their risk of being named in malpractice suits. * An "As I See It" column says the word recruitment as it applies to nursing should contain five action words: repair, restore, renew, refresh, and supply.

20 YEARS AGO IN THE AORN JOURNAL

The July 1980 AORN Journal explores findings that patients do not always understand consent forms. Editor Elinor S. Schrader asks members to evaluate their own forms and make sure they are reader friendly. * One article gives nurses insight about how to help patients deal with temporary changes in sexual activity after undergoing abdominal surgery. * With summer in full swing, the Journal reports that lawn mower accidents among children are becoming more frequent. * One author believes stress during pregnancy may cause female offspring to suffer physical abnormalities and reproductive difficulties.

10 YEARS AGO IN THE AORN JOURNAL

A study in the July 1990 AORN Journal explores the use of humor as a preoperative teaching strategy. * In a letter to the editor, an AORN member--after learning that the average age of a perioperative nurse is 42--challenges readers to identify one reason they are nurses and to sell that benefit to the next generation. * One article discusses the legal issues and nursing implications of sexual harassment and offers guidelines on developing a sexual harassment policy. * An "Opinion" article urges nurses to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative in their OR orientation programs.

NEXT MONTH IN THE AORN JOURNAL

The August 2000 AORN Journal will feature an article about how to market the RN first assistant role, along with an article describing the role of advanced practice nurses in the perioperative setting. Next month's Journal also will include

* a Home Study Program about perioperative preparation of elderly surgical patients and patients' depression, delirium, and dementia;

* part one of a Home Study Program about complex regional pain syndrome; and

* information about Congress 2001 in Dallas.
