AORN Journal, Jan, 2002
The AORN Congress is a wonderful opportunity for professional growth and development. Attendees can earn valuable contact hours by attending education sessions, viewing research and clinical innovation/improvement posters, and participating in sessions on the exhibit floor--all while networking and enjoying the company of nursing colleagues in sunny Anaheim, Calif. The following is important information about the many education opportunities at Congress.
RESEARCH POSTERS AND CLINICAL IMPROVEMENT/INNOVATION POSTERS
Research posters will be displayed throughout Congress week, Sunday through Thursday, from 7 AM to 5 PM daily. The two poster displays offer 1.2 contact hours each and consist of research studies applicable to perioperative nursing practice. By reviewing these posters, attendees will learn more about the latest research on various clinical topics. Again this year, Clinical Improvement/ Innovation posters also will be featured. These posters show the clinical improvements or innovations that perioperative nurses have initiated that could be beneficial to your own perioperative setting. Attendees can earn 1.2 contact hours by reviewing these posters. Research and clinical improvement/innovation poster presenters will be available at their posters on Monday, April 22, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM to answer questions about their projects.
EDUCATION ON THE EXHIBIT FLOOR--A CONTINUED SUCCESS STORY
AORN and HealthStream|Education Design have partnered again for the 2002 AORN Congress to bring you continuing education on the exhibit floor. Continuing education activities will be presented by participating exhibitors, and contact hours for participation will be awarded by HealthStream| Education Design (Table 1). HealthStream|Education Design helps exhibitors provide education in two different formats:
* a 30-minute live workshop presented at an exhibitor's booth or
* an independent study module, which is a 50-minute, self-contained study guide or CD-ROM distributed at an exhibitor's booth for use during exhibit hours.
EDUCATION SESSIONS
Pre-Congress and Congress education sessions are identified by tracks. One track is designated per education session. The track identifies the very broad content area for each session. Most sessions have threads of several content areas. The following definitions identify broad content areas.
C Clinical G Government affairs/health policy I Informatics L/M Leadership/management P Professional development/issues R Recruitment and retention + These sessions qualify for AORN Risk
Management Credit. Earning four contact hours (CH) of AORN Risk Management Credit annually qualifies attendees for a 10% insurance premium credit. For details, call AORN's endorsed insurance administrator, Seabury & Smith, at (800) 621-3008. The letter "R" after the session number denotes a repeat session.
These tracks serve as a quick reference only. Session overviews provide more complete information on content to help you determine the sessions you should not miss.
New this your. Several sessions this year are referred to as "Hot Topics." These dynamic sessions are designed to address the latest challenges in perioperative nursing and will be scheduled by March 1, 2002. Updates will be available on AORN Online at http://www.aorn.org. Also new this year, delegates will receive packets that allow them to earn the same number of contact hours as nondelegates.
Note that sessions that have been updated since appearing in the registration brochure mailed to AORN members in November are indicated.
PRE-CONGRESS EDUCATION SESSION OVERVIEWS
Pre-Congress education sessions provide in-depth information critical to career development. This year, pre-Congress will feature two all-day sessions and six half-day sessions on Saturday, April 20. All pre-Congress sessions will be held at the Anaheim Marriott. Depending on session selection, attendees can earn from 3.4 to 7.2 contact hours. Space is limited for the hands-on sessions. Registration for pre-Congress will not be processed if session selection has not been completed. For more information about registration times and fees, see page 60.
