A chapter on the potential effects of air travel on health details everything from the supply of oxygen in the cabin to the potential for circulatory problems. Another chapter gives a comprehensive look at malaria, which poses a serious health threat to 125 million travelers per year. The chapter discusses which medications are effective in which countries, as well as how to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes carrying the malaria parasite. It also identifies areas in which malaria is not prevalent to prevent unnecessary use of antimalarial medications.
Though diseases are a major cause of ill health in travelers, the book notes that traffic accidents and drowning are responsible for the largest number of deaths to international travelers, according to the release. The book emphasizes the responsibility of each traveler to ensure they are prepared properly so that travel experiences are rewarding rather than potentially dangerous. The book has an accompanying web site at http://www.who.int/ith/.
