Shoup is a specialty assembly liaison (1999-present) and a member of the Nurses in Business, Industry & Consulting (1995-present) and the Nurse Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist (1994-present) Specialty Assemblies.

Shoup is a member of AORN of Seattle, where she is chapter president (2002-present) and chairs the bylaws committee (1993-present). She was president-elect (2001-2002) and vice president (1993-1997). She also chaired the newsletter (2001-2002), nominating (2000-2001), membership (2000-2001), seminar/education/program (1993-1997), and research (1995-1996) committees. Shoup was a member of the board (1997-1999) and a member of the nominating (1999-2000), research (1993-1998), and Project Alpha (1993-1995) committees.

Shoup is a member of her state nurses association (1997-present), the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (1993-present), Sigma Theta Tau (1993-present), and the Washington State Council of Perioperative Nurses (1993-present). She has attended 10 Congresses in the past 10 years, nine as a delegate and one as an alternate.

Election statement. Margaret Meade said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has," and what a world we live in! As perioperative nurses, we are faced with many challenges: a nursing shortage, issues of patient safety, increasing demands on our members' time, and a health care system seemingly in crisis.

AORN is a thoughtful, committed group. We are committed to our organization, to our profession, and to our patients. We have faced similar challenges in the past, and we have successfully confronted those challenges. As a result, we have grown. We now are navigating the paths of the political process, we are building relationships with like-minded organizations, such as the American College of Surgeons, and we are taking a leadership role in patient safety.

As your president, I will continue to demonstrate the same thoughtful, committed actions I have shown during the past 20 years. I will be thoughtful in consideration of all points of view on an issue, open to new ideas, and willing to challenge the possibilities. I will continue to be committed in action as when I started the Washington State Council, worked to ensure the RN as circulator in Washington state, and mentored other perioperative nurses and nursing students into leadership roles. As your president, I will continue to listen to what you, the members, believe and desire and represent you at critical times when decisions are made.

I am committed to continuing our legislative activities, promoting our safety initiatives, and strengthening our membership. I will work to ensure the viability of AORN through allocation of resources at both the national and local levels to invigorate the membership by attracting new members, mentoring new leaders, and drawing nursing students into perioperative nursing. I will work to bring high-quality, low-cost education and research-based standards to our members.
