AORN Awards to be presented at Congress

The AORN awards for outstanding accomplishments during the past ear will be presented during Congress at the Awards Dinner to be held Saturday, March 20, 2004, at 6:30 PM at the Seal Diego Convention Center, San Diego. For more information about the dinner, see "Congress Highlights," page 23 in this issue of the Journal. Recipients of Outstanding Achievement, Chapter of the Year, and Writers Contest Awards will be recognized.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

The outstanding achievement awards this year recognize

* Patricia C. Seifert, 1LN, MSN, CNOR, CRNFA, FAAN--Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing;

* Barbara Rusynko, RN, MSEd, CNOR-4Dutstanding Achievement in Perioperative Clinical Nursing Education;

* Sharon C. Jimison, RN, CNOR--Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Patient Education;

* Helen M. Pumphrey, RN, CNOR--Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Nursing Management;

* Jane H. Flowers, RN, MSN, CNOR Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Clinical Nursing Practice;

* Suzanne C. Beyea, RN, PhD, FAAN--Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Nursing Research; and

* Anne S. Medlin, RN, BSN, CNOR, and Vivian C. Watson, RN, CNOR--Outstanding Achievement in Mentorship.

CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

For the 2004 Congress, members of the Membership, Legislative, Research, and Continuing Education Approval Committees selected five chapter competition categories for the Chapter of the Year Awards. These categories are membership, research, newsletter, outstanding achievement in continuing education, and legislative. Committee members solicited chapters to complete individual surveys, scored the surveys, and submitted the point scores to the Awards Committee. Members of the Awards Committee collated and evaluated points and used composite points to determine the award recipients. Chapter of the Year Awards recognize whalers in each chapter size category (ie, small, medium, intermediate, large). Each category may have a gold, silver, and bronze winner. A chapter may be the recipient of the Chapter of the Year Award (ie, gold) in its size category only once every three years; however, chapters may be selected for silver or bronze awards in consecutive years. WRITERS CONTEST AWARDS

The Writers Contest Awards recognize authors of quality AORN Journal articles. There are four categories for this contest--clinical/ambulatory, education, research, and management. At least one author of a manuscript must be an RN and an AORN member for an article to be considered for an award. All AORN Journal articles that meet this requirement and are published during the calendar year preceding Congress are eligible for the contest. Winning articles in each category are chosen based on points awarded to the articles by AORN Journal editors, Editorial Board members, and independent judges.
