AORN Journal, Jan, 2005
In a culturally diverse health care environment, my own cultural diversity has been an effective tool to help others--patients as well as other health care professionals--provide quality perioperative nursing care. As our practice becomes globalized, cultural diversity is a reality, and I bring this special quality to AORN. Not only are our patients multicultural, but our perioperative nurses are as well.
I will continue to serve this organization with all my energy, wisdom, and passion as I have done in the past. I believe in our mission, and I find it a privilege to serve such an exceptional organization.
Rosemarie T. Schroeder, RN, BSN, CNOR, is the OR manager at University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC. She earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, Wis.
Schroeder has been a perioperative nurse for 29 years and a member of AORN for 28 years. She is a member of AORN of Tarheels East (2000-present), the North Carolina Council of Operating Room Nurses (1995-present), and the Leadership Specialty Assembly (1995; 2000-2004). She was a member of AORN of Dogwood (1995-2000) and a member of the Ambulatory Surgery (1999-2000) and RN First Assistant (1997-1999) Specialty Assemblies. She has attended Congress 10 times in the past 10 years, eight times as a delegate and once as an alternate.
Schroeder received a North Carolina great 100 nurses award (1999).
The highlights of Schroeder's service to AORN include that she is a member of the National Scholarship Committee (2004-present). She was chair of the National Committee on Education (1999-2000) and a member (1998-1999). She also was a member of the Legislative Committee (1996-1998). Schroeder was chair of the North Carolina Council of Operating Room Nurses (2002-2004) and vice president (1997-1999). She also is president-elect of AORN of Tarheels East (2004-present). She was treasurer of AORN of Tarheels East (2002-2004) and president of AORN of Dogwood (1995).
Schroeder was a member of the board of the North Carolina RNFA Assembly (1998-1999) and a volunteer for Operation Smile missions (1997-1998), Relay for Life (1999), the American Heart Association Heart Week program (1998), and a bicycle safety rodeo (1997).
Election Statement: AORN is the premier organization of perioperative nurses. Healthy organizations are about constructive relationships. They unify individuals, provide support to meet needs, and grant the courage to both endure disappointments and celebrate triumphs with heads held high.
We alone are responsible for our future. Patient safety, one nurse/one patient, and decreasing membership are issues in AORN's spotlight. New ideas are emerging, but it will take grassroots commitment and leadership to continue evolving.
The Perioperative Nursing Data Set validates our core concepts of integrity, advocacy, service, and research. We must strive to enhance our partnerships with patients, physicians, industry, academia, and the public. We need to continue to showcase our accomplishments in the media.
