AORN forms new specialty assemblies

In recognition of members' diverse interests and practice areas, AORN has formed the following new specialty assemblies.

* The Advanced Practice Nursing Specialty Assembly is for members interested in advanced practice nursing, advanced degrees, and research opportunities associated with graduate programs.

* The Central Supply/Sterite Processing/Materials Management Specialty Assembly is for members who manage or interact with central supply, sterile processing, and purchasing departments or those who want to [earn more about sterilization, high-level disinfection, packaging systems, and inventory control.

* The Endovascular Specialty Assembly is for members who are managing, acting as specialists in, or interested in invasive radiology, cardiac catheterization procedures, and pain management.

* The General Surgery/Gynecology Specialty Assembly is for members who are acting as specialists or who are interested in surgical procedures involving the peritoneal cavity, gastrointestinal organs, aorta, peripheral vascular system, endocrine system, breast cancer, and reproductive organs.

* The Multicultural Nursing Specialty Assembly is for members who are interested in developing communication skills and acquiring knowledge relevant to cultural sensitivity when working with patients or other health care professionals from various cultural backgrounds.

* The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialty Assembly is for members who specialize or are interested in elective or reconstructive plastic procedures.

* The Trauma Specialty Assembly is for members who work in trauma settings or who are interested in learning more about trauma procedures.

AORN members can choose to join one of the seven new assemblies or one of the established specialty assemblies. The other 16 specialty assemblies address

* ambulatory surgery;

* cardiothoracics;

* integrated health practices;

* leadership;

* military and government nurses;

* minimally invasive surgery and lasers;

* neurosurgery;

* nurse educator/clinical nurse specialist;

* nurses in business, industry, and consulting;

* ophthalmology;

* orthopedics;

* pediatrics;

* perioperative nursing informatics;

* retired nurses;

* RN first assistants; and

* rural/small hospitals.
