Supply Chain in the OR--Streamlining Day to Day Operations: Controlling the cost of supplies in the OR has become an ongoing point of discussion in ORs nationwide as perioperative health care providers are faced with trying to balance the demand for new technology and shrinking reimbursement. This session will provide practical solutions and strategies for OR directors, managers, and staff to analyze existing practices, explore the pros and cons of standardization and custom versus standard products, identify cost savings opportunities, and implement initiatives that will enable them to control supply costs and maximize reimbursement.

Remember when we used to call it "conscious sedation?" Terminology has changed to "moderate sedation" or "procedural sedation," reflecting evolving roles and responsibilities for nurses. New definitions and standards are being promulgated by groups such as the Joint Commission and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Drugs such as propofol are inching into nurses' hands, with serious implications to be considered. Is your practice ready for these challenges? Supply Chain in the OR--How "Savvy" Are You in Optimizing Existing Assets?: Controlling the cost of supplies in the OR is more than having an efficient internal system to manage OR supplies. It requires knowledge and understanding of the technology available to automate manual processes; the expertise to effectively understand and negotiate with vendors; and the ability to create "collaborative working relationships" with the OR team (administration, staff, and physicians) to ensure that patients have the products available that will achieve the desired clinical outcomes. This session will provide practical solutions and strategies for OR directors, managers, and staff to learn about new technologies that can automate processes related to supply acquisition and distribution; to develop strategies for negotiating pricing through facility or group purchasing agreements; to understand the benefits of standardization; and, finally, to develop processes to control the flow of vendors and new products in their facilities.
