Patient safety first - Letters

AORN Journal,  August, 2002  by Vicki Dreger

I appreciate the article by Suzanne C. Beyea, RN, PhD, titled "Nurses making a difference one life at a time," ("Patient Safety First," May 2002, page 1005). I am greatly concerned about patient safety and the "systems problems" that lend to systems-related errors. Articles such as this can lead to dialogue about the reality of errors and practical ways to prevent them in a "culture of safety." Awareness of the importance of the issue and statistics and research related to the topic are all avenues to progress (ie, a reduction in adverse events). I have learned a considerable amount through AORN Journal articles such as this. Ultimately, that serves to avert serious errors on my part, thus protecting my patients from harm and saving my license. Errors are more likely to occur with pressure for quick turnovers and the general rush present during a hectic day. I commend AORN, President Donna S. Watson, RN, MSN, CNOR, ARNP, FNP-C, and the Board of Directors for the proactive stance and commitment of resources to this initiative and our members' promise to surgical patients to promote a safe, caring, high-quality perioperative experience. I look forward to future patient safety articles.
