Board of Directors meets for development; approves budget - Board Report

AORN Journal,  August, 2003  by Sharon A. McNamara

The AORN Board of Directors met at Headquarters in Denver from June 4 to 7, 2003. All Board members were present, as was Executive Director Tom Cooper, CAE, and executive staff members. The Board participated in a development day with Bud Crouch from Tecker Consultants, Trenton, NJ. The theme, which was "The challenge of leading an association in turbulent times--Building a leadership strategy" was timely and the session was very enlightening. An education session on relations with the media also was provided to Board members and executive staff members. During the formal Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved the minutes from the February 21 to 22, and March 28, 2003, Board of Directors meetings. Other topics discussed during the June Board meeting included the budget, AORN Management Solutions, Lobby Day 2004, and Congress.

AORN BUDGET

Board members approved the six-month budget for July through December 2003. This action will bring AORN in sync fiscally with the January through December fiscal year approved by the 2003 House of Delegates during the 2003 AORN Congress in Chicago.

MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS

The Board of Directors also approved the creation of AORN Management Solutions (formerly called Opportunity) as a separate entity beginning July 1, 2003. An action plan that included financial resources, the timeframe, and creating a board of directors was addressed. Appointments for the Management Solutions board of directors are being processed.

LOBBY DAY 2004

A motion was made and approved to fund $500 scholarships to the 2004 Lobby Day for an individual from each state. Board members strongly support AORN's presence and visibility on Capital Hill to support AORN's legislative priorities.

CONGRESS 2004

Board members also approved the 2004 Congress week-at-a-glance schedule. This schedule sets the AORN business and educational plan during Congress week in San Diego.

The AORN Board of Directors met again on July 24, 2003 before the Leadership Conference in Denver. A report on that meeting will appear in a future issue of the AORN Journal. Board members also are scheduled to meet Nov 13 to 15, 2003. Suggested agenda items should be sent to President Betty Shultz, RN, CNOR, at AORN Headquarters, 2170 S Parker Rd, Suite 300, Denver, CO, 80231-5711.
