Dental health care infection control guidelines released - Brief Article

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released new guidelines for infection control in dental health care settings, according to a Dec 18, 2003, news release from the CDC. These comprehensive recommendations update previous guidelines issued in 1986 and 1993. The new document also consolidates information from other relevant standards and guidelines from the CDC and other infection control organizations.

The guidelines, developed by CDC staff members and infection control experts, review scientific evidence on dental infection control issues and provide evidence-based recommendations. The 2003 guidelines cover a number of issues not discussed in previous guidelines, including

* management of occupational exposures to infectious microorganisms transmitted through contact with blood and body fluids;

* dental unit water quality;

* selection and use of instruments with features designed to prevent needle sticks and other sharps injuries;

* hand hygiene products, including alcohol hand rubs;

* Latex hypersensitivity;

* dental radiology;

* program evaluation; and

* management of personnel health and safety.

The new guidelines are being distributed widely to dental health practitioners, education programs, state boards of dental examiners, and dental laboratories.
