AORN Journal, Feb, 2005
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has created an interactive web site that shows the amount and Location of certain toxic chemicals released into US communities, according to a Dec 3, 2004, news release from the National Institutes of Health. The site--called TOXMAP--can be accessed at http://toxmap.nlm.nih.gov.
The web site focuses on the geographic distribution of chemical releases, their amounts, and trends over time. The information comes from industrial facilities throughout the United States, as reported annually to the Environmental Protection Agency. The web site also provides links to the NLM's collection of toxicology and environmental health references, as welt as to data on hazardous chemical substances in its TOXNET databases. Fact sheets and summaries about the various chemicals also appear on the web site.
