Unit I defines basic principles of leadership and management from past, present, and future perspectives. Management is a part of leadership, and this relationship is vital to the success of the manager, the organization, and ultimately, patient outcomes.
Unit II outlines basic skills necessary to construct budgets, write policies and procedures, use information technology, and determine staffing requirements. Real examples, forms, and step-by-step guidance through mathematical formulas greatly enhance learning.
In view of the present nursing shortage, unit III, on human resource management, is the most important of the topics presented. A combined position description and performance appraisal is provided and is a true time-saving tool. Techniques are presented to help leaders send consistent, positive messages to employees. Discussion of employment laws regarding discrimination, harassment, and benefits are brief and to the point.
Unit IV is a guide for writing a business plan. Each element is explained in detail. Two case studies take readers from the beginning through implementation and maintenance. The fundamentals of facility construction and design of an OR also are explained.
The final unit, on legal and regulatory issues, contains actual case examples. The latest information regarding the status of pending legal issues will give readers an appreciation of the legal process. The last chapter reminds nurses that they are the best advocates for public policy related to nursing. Resources to heighten political awareness are presented.
This book is not just for nurse managers or perioperative nurses. Students, educators, and administrators will find this reference invaluable for understanding the challenges that health care leaders will encounter today and in the future.
