30 years ago in the AORN Journal

AORN Journal, August, 2006

The Journal focuses on what nursing will be like in the twenty-first century. The "Editorial" contains a fictional scenario that includes a decontamination chamber, a plastic helmet that does not crush the nurse's hair, and national health insurance that covers all US citizens from birth to death.

* The "Board Report" states that the AORN standards will be compiled in a loose-leaf notebook and made available for sale. * An author writes that hospital costs per admission rose from $127 in 1950 to $174 in 1972 and predicts an increase to $1,000 by the time gasoline prices are raised to $1/L. * The Journal reports that a commemorative postage stamp will honor Clara Maass, RN, who died of yellow fever after volunteering to be bitten by a mosquito to determine if it was a disease carrier.
