Managing Up: Navigating Politically--Part 2--Marcia B. Riley

No one can escape office politics! They are an unavoidable fact of life in every workplace. If you want to accomplish your personal and business goals in spite of this fact, don't miss a minute of this upbeat, humorous, and impactful two-part presentation. In Part II, you will walk away with a new definition of "Managing Up" and learn skills that can be applied on your first day back at work. A key part of Marcia's job was to rescue leaders who were derailing. Derailment is rarely the result of having the wrong degree or a lack of brains; rather, it is about communication. Succeeding at office politics begins with knowing what to say and how to say it!

CDC Guidelines: What's New in Disinfection and Sterilization--William A. Rutala, PhD, MPH

In the 22 years since the last Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guideline on this topic, new processes, new procedures, and new products have been introduced in health care settings. This presentation will review the new CDC recommendations (late 2007) about disinfection and sterilization, including how to perform surface disinfection in the OR, reprocess equipment contaminated with emerging pathogens, reprocess intricate semicritical patient care items, conduct sterilization monitoring, and achieve and maintain the highest standard of equipment reprocessing. Adherence to these recommendations should improve disinfection and sterilization practices in health care facilities and thereby reduce infections associated with contaminated patient-care items.

Aging Perioperative Nurses: Issues and Retention--Patricia C. Seifert, RN, MSN, CNOR, CRNFA, FAAN

As a result of the nursing shortage, many facilities are focusing on retaining the "aging" nurse. With the growing interest in utilizing this group of health care workers, there are associated questions about real and perceived cost issues, safety considerations, and chronologic limits--physiologic, cognitive, and functional--affecting older nurses. These issues are addressed and discussed in light of research related to older perioperative nurses, aging surgeons, and other health care workers. Retention strategies to retain older nurses--and their accumulated wisdom--are discussed.
