MAJORING IN NURSING FROM PREREQUISITES TO POSTGRADUATE STUDY AND BEYOND By Janet R. Katz 1999, 130 pp $11 paperback

To be or not to be a professional nurse--that is the question. It is a question asked not only by high school graduates, but also by adults continuing their education or seeking a career change. This book is written by a nurse with a diverse background in nursing and education who, like many nurses, has asked herself the "to be or not to be" question. Through research and a constant review of life's experiences, the author addresses this question, but also discovers that there is no simple answer.

The goal of this book is to present numerous aspects of nursing to help individuals decide whether to become a professional nurse. It is an informational aid to high school students selecting a career path, adults starting or returning to college or making a career change, or school counselors. The book includes many personal views by the author and other professional nurses defining what nurses are and are not (eg, "Doctor Wannabees, Angels of Mercy, Florence Nightingales").

Each chapter is outlined in an easy-to-read fashion, enticing the reader with information related to aspects of nursing, the best schools for individual circumstances, and the ultimate career choice--where to work. Factual information, personal anecdotes, and individual recollections from nurses interviewed during the author's research and previous work experiences also are included. Different nursing programs are discussed in detail, allowing the reader to list pros and cons of each. The author also discusses the ultimate career choice and the many available options.

Extra bonuses of the book are suggested readings, including books, journal articles, and American Nurses Association publications. Several information and support services are mentioned, as well as resources for financial aid. With the growing Internet appeal, a list of web sites for nursing organizations completes a well-rounded reference list.

The answer to the question of whether to be a professional nurse is not easy. By using this guide, students can grasp an understanding of the complexity of professional nursing today and use this information to make an educated decision. The information is well presented, making this guide a very useful tool.

This book is available from Farrara, Straus and Giroux, 19 Union Sq W, New York, NY 10003; (212) 206-5322.
