Catherine Kleiner, RN, PhD, has joined the AORN Professional Services staff as director, perioperative education and nursing research. Dr Kleiner has been a perioperative nurse for more than 22 years and has experience working in both clinical and academic facilities. In addition to her passion for perioperative nursing education, Dr Kleiner has a strong interest in nursing research. Her broad nursing and perioperative experience will be an asset in improving AORN's perioperative education content and incorporating more evidence-based nursing practice into the work of AORN.

Dr Kleiner received a diploma in nursing from Mercy School of Nursing, Toledo, Ohio; a bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio; a master of science in nursing degree from Medical College of Ohio, Toledo, Ohio; and a doctorate in nursing from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. Her academic experience includes positions as an assistant professor and coordinator of a graduate level program at the Medical College of Ohio School of Nursing. She also developed a perioperative nursing program and taught in a perioperative elective course for baccalaureate level students at the Medical College of Ohio. Her clinical experience includes management of a same day surgery unit, and she has practiced as a staff nurse in both critical care and postanesthesia care units.
Dr Kleiner has published several articles about topics related to perioperative patient care, contributed to several research studies, and given poster presentations on topics such as experiences of pain in older adult patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty, incidence of hypothermia in surgical patients, and addressing the perioperative nursing shortage.
