Mentoring—what it is and how to make it work

AORN Journal,  May, 2002  by Debra L. Fawcett

New nurses can feel whether they are accepted. If they do not feel accepted, they are more likely to leave and go to a more accepting unit. It is imperative that perioperative nurses look closely at how the perioperative team treats new nurses. This often is a difficult and frustrating job. Perioperative nurses must demonstrate leadership through values, ethics, trust, and application of standards. Building trust in the OR is an essential component of creating a nurturing environment.
