AORN Journal, May, 2002 by Burke Beu
Joan Butera has worked as a CRNFA since 1992 and has been in independent practice in Tucson for the past three years. She owns and operates Alpha Medical Billing of Arizona. She also holds a faculty position at Phoenix Community College and is studying in the masters of science in nursing/family nurse practitioner program at the University of Phoenix. She has been actively involved in legislative issues at AORN since the beginning of efforts to gain reimbursement for CRNFAs.
Janelle Coates lives in Boise, Idaho, with her daughter. She is the service director of the otorhinolaryngology, gynecology, and neurosurgery departments at the Boise Veterans Administration Medical Center. Before becoming an RN and RNFA, she practiced as a certified surgical technologist and sat on the review board for the first assisting certification examination taken by surgical technologists. She became an RN in 1996 because of concerns about the validity of these examinations. Her unique perspective provides AORN with insight and expertise regarding legislative priorities related to perioperative nursing and the appropriate role of other assistive personnel. Her experience includes having chaired the legislative committee of her local AORN chapter and advocacy activities with the Idaho Nurses Association.
