40 years ago in Or Nursing - Perioperative Time Capsule

AORN Journal, May, 2002

In the May/June 1962 issue of OR Nursing, a surgeon author says "the dexterous, devoted and painstaking instrument nurse in the operating room is frequently not appreciated sufficiently by the surgeon." * "Clinical Briefs" tells of the success of a machine that administers a 3,500-V electrical shock to patients suffering heart attacks.

* In "Presidential Views," Ethel I. West, RN, discusses staff development of the OR team. She says that because of the dwindling supply of adequately prepared nurses, a large amount of time is spent teaching new personnel. * In "Q & A," one reader says that OR staff nurses do not have the time nor training to teach new graduates and that it becomes a nuisance.
