The article "Ensuring correct site surgery" is the basis for this AORN Journal independent study. The behavioral objectives and examination for this program were prepared by Rebecca Holm, RN, MSN, CNOR, clinical editor, with consultation from Susan Bakewell, RN, MS, education program professional, Center for Perioperative Education.
A minimum score of 70% on the multiple-choice examination is necessary to earn 2 contact hours for this independent study. Participants receive feedback on incorrect answers. Each applicant who successfully completes this study will receive a certificate of completion. The deadline for submitting this study is Nov 30, 2005.

BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES
After reading and studying the article on ensuring correct site surgery, the nurse will be able to
(1) discuss the key elements of why wrong site surgery occurs,
(2) describe the role of the RN as patient advocate in providing for patient safety in the perioperative arena,
(3) identify the risk factors that promote the conditions that result in wrong site surgery,
(4) discuss the essential components of a policy for surgical site verification, and
(5) identify resources to assist with the development of patient safety practices.
This program meets criteria for CNOR and CRNFA recertification, as well as other continuing education requirements.
