Alliance on food allergy meets to set goals - Brief Article

During recent years, food allergies have increased markedly, with children being most affected, according to a Sept 20, 2002, news release from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. In light of this, the network recently hosted the second annual meeting of the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Alliance, an international group of food allergy organizations established to facilitate information sharing, form partnerships, and advance important issue to people with food allergies and anaphylaxis.

Organizations located in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States were represented at the meeting. Common goals identified at the meeting include

* requiring that all ingredient statements provide clear, consistent, reliable information;

* participating in the development of research studies on global issues;

* developing national databases on the epidemiology and effect of allergies and patient registries for each member country;

* promoting guidelines for managing students with allergies in schools and child care facilities; and

* increasing overall awareness of food allergies in the restaurant, food service, and airline industries.

Food allergies increasingly are becoming a global concern as the food supply becomes more universal and people travel more often. Also, differences exist between countries, and studying these differences may help researchers understand why food allergies have increased in western societies in recent years.
