In "Q & A," a reader asks what precautions to take in caring for surgical patients who have AIDS. * Researchers conducting a study on nurses' compliance with aseptic technique counted 509 infractions for 36 procedures. The average number of infractions was found to be greatest for procedures scheduled third in a day.

* "Legislation" reports that the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences recommends $80 million in funding for the Nurse Training Act; however, President Reagan recommended only $13 million in funding. * An article on industrial sterilization of medical devices says 200 billion sterile items, solutions, and other preparations are used annually in health care.
