AORN Journal, Nov, 2004

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has developed two digital video discs (DVDs) aimed at combatting childhood obesity, according to a Sept 27, 2004, news release from AHRQ. The first DVD, Max's Magical Delivery: Fit for Kids, is designed to teach children ages five to nine years about healthy eating and fun ways to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. The 30-minute DVD also offers tips for parents on how to make changes in the way their families eat and exercise.

The DVD was produced in cooperation with FitTV, part of the Discovery Networks US. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and other health care groups are partnering with AHRQ to distribute copies of this DVD to clinicians and encourage them to have their patients order copies.

The second DVD, Childhood Obesity: Combatting the Epidemic, was developed for pediatricians, family physicians, and other health care providers to help them [earn new methods for assessing and treating children who are overweight. This 55-minute DVD provides tools such as a body mass index measurement for children and tips for initialing and sustaining positive behavior changes in children.

This program was produced in cooperation with the Discovery Health Channel and it also will air on the Discovery Health Channel every week through Nov 28, 2004. Children's health care providers, including nurse practitioners, can earn free continuing education credits through either the DVD or televised version.
