Health care industry identifies technology priorities - Brief Article

AORN Journal,  June, 2002

The top information technology priorities for health care providers include upgrading security on technology systems to meet Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements, promoting patient safety, and reducing medical errors, according to a Jan 28, 2002, news story from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). These and other findings are reported in the 13th Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey.

Seventy-four percent of respondents cited clinical information systems as the most important application for health care organizations in the next two years. Fifty-eight percent said that enterprise resource planning applications would be important to their organization during the next few years.

Last year's second highest priority, deploying Internet technology, decreased eight points in this year's survey, and the projected importance of Internet technology during the next two years decreased 14 points. Web applications were identified as important by only 38% of respondents, down from 50% in 2001. Initiatives in health care seem to be narrowing to deal with quality and cost, as indicated by the decreased priority placed on Internet technology deployment, according to the release.

Data were collected by a self-administered, Internet-based questionnaire. Three hundred fifty-five responses representing 355 health care provider organizations were received. For more information on this survey, call (312) 915-9237 or send an e-mail to tlopez@himss.org.
