AORN Foundation's annual Black Tie Gala and 5K Run/Walk combine fund-raising with fun

AORN Journal,  June, 2004

Sunday, March 21, to Thursday, March 25, 2004

Each year at Congress, the AORN Foundation gives attendees a chance to dress to the nines at the Black Tie Gala and don their running shoes and shorts for the 5K Run/Walk, all while pursuing its mission of raising funds to provide scholarships, research grants, and educational opportunities. In addition, the Foundation received a special donation for the Museum of Perioperative Nursing and named its new board of trustees members.

BLACK TIE GALA

Marriott Hall in the Marriott Hotel & Marina was the site for the always-elegant AORN Foundation Black Tie Gala. During the Gala, the Foundation acknowledged and expressed appreciation to its benefactors and advocates.

Proceeds of the Run/Walk will help fund scholarships, education events, and AORN's 2004 Leadership Conference, which will be held in Denver on July 16-18, 2004.

DONATION TO THE AORN MUSEUM OF PERIOPERATIVE NURSING

Beginning in the early 1970s, Congress exhibitors, through the Exhibitors Advisory Committee (EAC), gave attendees commemorative charms for charm bracelets or commemorative lapel pins to celebrate each Congress. In 1987, exhibitors stopped giving out these items; however, since 1988, Scanlan International, St Paul, has given out these commemorative items independent of the EAC. Scanlan representatives presented a framed set of these items to the Foundation for the AORN Museum of Perioperative Nursing.

A traveling exhibit of some of the museum's artifacts was on display in the Congress Resource Center. The AORN Foundation continues to solicit financial support for the museum, which is located at the AORN Headquarters in Denver. A portion of the museum's exhibits, including historic medical instruments, is available for display at state, regional, or chapter meetings. Donations of nursing materials, books, and artifacts also are being solicited. Members, individuals, chapters, state councils, and companies are welcome to donate. Donations and pledges can be sent to the AORN Foundation, 2170 S Parker Rd, Suite 300, Denver, CO 80231.

AORN FOUNDATION BOARD

The AORN Foundation board of trustees held a meeting on Monday of Congress week. New board members are Melanie Barstad, president, acute care, Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems, Inc; Kenneth Donlon, vice president, distributor sales, Tyco Healthcare, Kendall; Nick Mendez, vice president, OMSpecialties, Owens & Minor; Jane Rothrock RN, DNSc, CNOR, FAAN; and Robert Von Kaenel, Jr, vice president, marketing and business development, Getinge USA, Inc.
