AORN Journal, June, 2007 by Nancy Harbin
The AORN Foundation, which was established in 1991, is a charitable and educational foundation that generates financial resources to support perioperative nurses interested in continuing education; leadership development; patient safety; workplace safety; and new, innovative programs. In securing gifts that support the programs and services for AORN members, the AORN Foundation has been an important part of AORN's success for the past 16 years. Since 2000, the programs and opportunities offered through the Foundation have provided more than $2.5 million to AORN members.

Thanks to the generosity of attendees, the AORN Foundation raised more than $50,000 during the 2007 AORN Congress. Foundation staff members enjoyed visiting with everyone who stopped by their booth in Orlando, Fla, and they express their deepest appreciation to everyone who made a donation. Your gift to the Foundation enhances the services and programs that AORN provides to members and will make a difference in the future of perioperative nursing now and in generations to come. Your support of the Foundation is greatly appreciated.
CONGRESS GRANTS
The AORN Foundation awarded $55,500 in grants to help 118 AORN members attend the 2007 Congress. The Foundation was able to award these grants because of the generosity of the Integra Foundation, the Competency & Credentialing Institute, and the AORN Exhibitors' Advisory Committee.
AMBASSADORS OF CARING PROGRAM
During Congress, the Foundation initiated the "Ambassadors of Caring" program. A percentage of the donations made to the Foundation's Annual Fund during the 2007 Congress will be donated to St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn, in the name of AORN members.
CHAPTER AND STATE COUNCIL CHALLENGE
Many chapters and state councils donated to the AORN Foundation during Congress. Chapters that contributed to the Chapter Challenge between April 1, 2006, and March 31, 2007, have been entered into a drawing for the Ruth P. Shumaker Grant. The winning chapter will receive a $350 grant to help one chapter member attend the 2008 AORN Congress in Anaheim, Calif. The winning chapter will be drawn during AORN's Leadership Conference in July. AORN of Dela-Mar (Delaware) won the grant for the 2007 Congress in Orlando. The Foundation thanks the chapters and state councils and each of their members who participated in the Chapter and State Council Challenge.
NIGHTINGALE TRIBUTE
For a second year, Congress attendees were able to contribute to the AORN Foundation in memory of friends, AORN members, or colleagues who have passed away. Many attendees donated in memory of someone and received a white rose to place on the Symbol of Light Wreath.
CONSECUTIVE YEAR DONOR PINS
The AORN Foundation recognized its donors who have contributed to the Foundation for five, 10, or 15 consecutive years with a special recognition pin. Pin recipients who attended Congress were able to pick up their pins at the Foundation booth; pin recipients who did not attend Congress will receive their pins by mail.
