Hasbro Buys Pokemon Cards

Selling to Kids, Sept 15, 1999

Hasbro last Thursday announced its intention to buy Wizards of the Coast, which sells Pokemon trading cards, for about $325 million. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of this month. The acquisition also brings with it Wizards' Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons trading card games.

With the deal, Hasbro will gain deeper inroads into the Pokemon phenomenon. The company already makes toys based on the Pokemon TV show. (Wayne Charness, Hasbro, 401/727-5983, Carol Knight, Wizards of the Coast, 425/204-7650)
