Books Win Instant Clout

Selling to Kids, Jan 26, 2000

Bud, Not Buddy, from Delcorte Press, and Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, from Viking, will be sporting familiar gold seals on their covers following the American Library Association's midwinter meeting in San Antonio last week.

Bud, the story of a 10-year old boy searching for his father in the wake of his mother's death, came away with the John Newbery Medal for the most distinguished contribution to American children's literature of the year. Joseph Had a Little Overcoat took the association's top prize for picture books, the Randolph Caldecott Medal. Winners of both medals are selected by American school and public librarians. While the awards may not be based on popularity among kids, the books must reflect knowledge of the understandings and appreciations of children, according to the ALA.
