¿Es posible detectar la anemia falciforme en el bebé dentro del útero?
Sí. Mediante la obtención de muestras de fluído amniótico o liquido en el que flota el feto o del tejido de la placenta, un médico puede decir si el feto tiene o no anemia falciforme o si lleva el rasgo de la célula falciforme. Esta prueba puede efectuarse ya en el primer trimestre del embarazo.
¿Qué deberán saber los futuros padres?
Las personas que planean ser padres deberán saber si son portadores del gen de la célula falciforme. Si lo son, tal vez quieran recibir información y consejo genético. El consejero puede decirles a los futuros padres qué probabilidades tienen de que su hijo vaya a tener el gen de la célula falciforme o anemia falciforme. Es posible obtener pruebas de diagnóstico e información correctas en los departamentos de salud, centros de salud vecinales, centros médicos y clínicas que atienden a individuos con anemia falciforme.
