There you will be able to stroll the Hollywood Walk of Fame where over 2000 of your favorite celebrities are honored with a star in the sidewalk. Next we'll cruise down fashionable Rodeo Drive, considered by some to be the world's most prestigious shopping street. Whether it's the fabulous buildings or the notion that at any moment you might lust spot a famous celebrity, Rodeo Drive is thought of as the most American of streets with a uniquely Southern California attitude. You'll round Out your tour by seeing the best of downtown Los Angeles, home of the spectacular Music Center and Los Angeles City Hall. The Music Center provides quality music, dance, and opera for the Los Angeles community. The center also holds the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, home of the Academy Awards for many years. The Los Angeles City Hall was used in films almost from its dedication in 1928. You will recognize city hall in many of your favorite television shows such as Dragnet, Superman, L.A. Law, as well as movies like Mildred Pierce, War of the Worlds, 48 Hours, and countless Disney films. Welcome to Los Angeles, city of multiple personalities--perhaps the ultimate experiment in urban diversity that our evolution--crazed species has yet produced!

Evolving Skylines: The New Downtown

The "new downtown" (or "Bunker Hill") in Los Angeles is largely the product of the efforts of the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City. Beginning in the 1960s, this agency coordinated the investment of millions of dollars to develop a new downtown with a tall skyscraper profile that would contribute to Los Angeles' world city status. With major office buildings and hotels in place, the area is a focal point for international capital and international travelers. This walking tour will examine such issues as urban development and architecture in the last 40 years, with an emphasis on preservation issues and adaptive reuse of existing structures. Tour limited to 60 participants.
