Hispanic Mba Society Double8 Its Scholarship Funding

Hispanic Times Magazine, Dec, 1998

The high-school drop out rate for Hispanics is three times that of non-Hispanic whites: in 1996 only 9.2 percent of U.S. Hispanics had a bachelors degree or higher versus 23.6 percent of the general population. Hispanics are under-represented in senior management and corporate board of director positions across industries. These are all familiar issues, but what are the solutions?

Celebrating its 10th year anniversary, the National Society of Hispanic MBXs (NSHMBA) will grant $200,000 in scholarships in 1998 alone. This is a record amount - doubling the organization's previous yearly scholarship awards.

Presently, scholarship funds are raised primarily by the operation of NSHMBA programs, which include its annual conference. "I attribute our dramatic growth to the increasing realization in our community that we can't rely on external forces to solve our issues, we are accountable for leadership and want to be an active participant," commented Ramiro J. AtristainCarrion, Chairman of the NSHMBA Board of Directors.

"As we begin our second decade of operation, our support for students also reaches a new level," added AtristainCarrion. "A fundamental belief of NSHMBA is that the potential for success is present in every member of the Hispanic community. It is critical that those of us who are achieving and participating in the business world help other Latinos develop their unique skills and abilities."

NSHMBA was established in 1988 as a nationwide Hispanic organization formed to promote leadership through MBA (Masters in Business Administration) level education and career development among Hispanic students and professionals. With 15 organized chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico. NSHMBA has a wide-reaching constituency that includes many top U.S. corporations, business organizations, and prestigious universities.

"With Hispanic purchasing power up to $348 billion last year, corporate America is seeking capable business professionals more than ever to meet the needs of this diversified market," explains John Honaman, NSHMBA Executive Director. "Our goal is to facilitate these opportunities for Hispanics through our scholarship funds, leadership, educational, networking and mentoring programs, and assist them to achieve success."
