Hispanic Times Magazine, Fall, 2002 by Janey M. Rifkin

As the 21st century continues to unfold, the manual labor force of the last century has improved its status, thereby altering the demographics of our nation. The dominant trend is the emerging size of our Latino Population--and our numbers transitioning into the middle class.

We come here to work, to improve our lives, to build businesses, to raise families. For two decades, this magazine has helped pave the way, by giving our young people the tools to succeed and to make the right choices.

One century from now, perhaps another group will be on the ascendancy. Maybe from China, India, Africa, or elsewhere. But for now, it is our turn.

Let us remember what the different cultures have in common--and work to strengthen those cultural disparities--rather than to focus on our differences. The ladder to social stability and individual success must be built on common grounds by all of us. This positive attitude will enhance success on many levels.

Our challenge is to keep the top rungs connected for those who seek to climb the ladder. The ladder must be in reach of everyone in our communities, no matter what language they speak, or where they come from.

The business sector reflects our growing diversity. Small business forms the largest single basis for economic progress. There is evidence that Hispanics are starting businesses at record rates. That's assimilation. That's the future.
