Life After The Navy
Hispanic Times Magazine, August, 2000 by Janey M. Rifkin
In 1994, while still on active duty with the United States Navy, Hector Gonzalez began planning for his life after the Navy. With his long career in the military soon drawing to a close, Hector outlined a plan that would allow him to systematically grow a business so that when he officially retired, he could step into his own successful business.
Responding to an ad in a magazine, he put his plan in motion by purchasing a Coverall~ Commercial Cleaning franchise in Jacksonville, Florida. Then, with the help and support of his family (wife, Lilliam; sons Hector Jr., Ramon and Manuel, and daughter Maria) Hector started to slowly build his business working a few hours a night during his active duty period.
"I knew I was making the correct choice after seeing the type of business package and comprehensive support that the company provided to franchise owners," Hector stated.
In 1996, after a Naval career that began 21 years earlier in his native Puerto Rico, Hector became a civilian. By that time, his plan was fully realized. His business had grown to the point where he could support his family, allowing for a smooth and easy transition into civilian life.
Today this Navy veteran employs 15 people. His sons have gone on to their own
military service in the Coast Guard, and his wife is able to spend time at home as Hector oversees the daily operations of the business.
"Jacksonville is a city that is constantly growing, and I want to be part of that growth," said Gonzalez, ever looking for another area of fulfillment. This time it is personal. Hector is gratified that his company provides people with a way to earn money to provide a better life for themselves.
Hector Gonzalez is also a humble man, placing credit for his current success not on himself --but rather "I owe everything I have today to the Lord our God, to my family, and to excellent employees willing to go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction
The journey for this proud Hispanic American took him from Ponce Puerto Rico to Mayport Naval Base to Jacksonville. It may have taken many years to complete, but considering the destination, it seems that Hector Gonzalez has plotted the right course.
