U.S. District Court Judge Joseph L. Taureo has made permanent a preliminary injunction issued on July 8, 1999 regarding the nomenclature of storage products from Hewlett-Packard and EMC. The injunction prohibits HP from infringing on EMC's registered trademarks in the naming and marketing of HP products. Judge Tauro also ordered HP to compensate EMC for its court costs. The lawsuit, filed on May 25, 1999, was in response to HP's introduction of storage products intended to compete with EMC, named HP SureStore E Disk Array MC256 and referred to by HP as E MC256. The injunction prohibits HP from using the letters MC in the names of any of HP's storage products.
