Norsam introduces 165GB "Pancake Disc," using particle beams instead of lasers

Emedia Professional, March, 1998

Norsam Technologies, Inc. has announced the Norsam HD-ROM (High Density Read Only Memory) digital data storage system, a "write once, read many" product designed for electronic media users requiring compact storage and retrieval of large volumes of data. The HD-ROM is specified to provide 165GB of storage capacity per side on a 120mm disc.

Norsam's HD-ROM, or "Pancake Disc," is targeted to the high-density digital data storage market currently occupied primarily by magnetic tape array and library systems and RAID and other magnetic hard drive systems. It uses charged particle beams to replace laser-based technologies, permitting much higher densities of data storage. The HD-ROM is impervious to electromagnetic disturbances and has the ability, where needed, to store data on materials that are extremely durable and resistant to abrasion, atmospheric contamination, heat, and other types of physical deterioration. It is anticipated that Norsam HD-ROM digital information will be written onto silicon discs that subsequently will be electroformed into metal discs to be used as archival masters and master duplication stampers.
