Eliane Elias Brazilian Classics

Latin Beat Magazine, Dec, 2003 by Luis Tamargo

(Blue Note)

Drawn from diverse formats (from solo piano to quintet) included in the 1984-1997 Blue Note discography of the renowned Brazilian jazz pianist/vocalist/composer/arranger Eliane Elias, this compilation consists mostly of venerable standards authored by Tom Jobim. Regardless of the chosen musical structure, Elias is always backed by outstanding North American and Brazilian players, including her present and former conjugal partners--bassist Marc Johnson and tenorist Michael Brecker, respectively. As usual, Elias manages to apply her jazz and classical credentials to the Brazilian songbook in an invigorating manner.
