Ever since she graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Venezuelan singer Maria Marquez has continued to develop her career in Northern California. She has performed and recorded with such well known artists as Joyce Cooling, Omar Sosa, John Santos, Trio Altamira and Wild Mango. She also developed her career as a composer, arranger and producer, having co-produced her first solo CD, De Uno y Otro Lado, in 1995 in her native Venezuela. Her self-produced release Once Cuentos de Amor/Eleven Love Stories (Palm Pictures, 2001) has received much critical acclaim.
On September 27, 2002, Marquez performed for the first time in Los Angeles at the J. Paul Getty Museum with an outstanding group of Bay Area musicians and left her audience clamoring for more.
The Getty program contained the following description:
This month at the Getty Museum:
"MarĂa Marquez--This Venezuelan-born chanteuse, known for her ability to more effortlessly between jazz and world music, is considered by many to be the heir apparent to such legendary vocalists as Nina Simone and Edith Piaf. She will be joined by five of the Bay Area's finest musicians in an evening of love songs, boleros, and bossa nova-esque joropos."
