A History of Early Cuban Trova (1900-1940)
(Alma Criolla 803)
(CDA)
MARK GUTIERREZ
Spanish Nights
(Mark Gutierrez Music)
This self-produced debut recording by multi-instrumentalist Mark Gutierrez gives prominence to his talents as a guitarist, vocalist, composer and arranger. A Los Angeles native, Gutierrez earned his formal musical education at the California State University of Los Angeles, receiving B.A. and M.A. degrees in music. For over a decade his ability to double equally on guitar and piano makes him one of the most in-demand working musicians in town. Gutierrez is also well versed in many styles, including jazz, classical, Latin, rock and flamenco. His musical versatility has earned him performances and studio recordings with the HMA Salsa Orchestra of Los Angeles, Germaine Franco, Poncho Sánchez, Trini López, Joan Sebastian, Bobby Matos, Johnny Blas and Susie Hansen.
Spanish Nights profiles the talents of Gutierrez simply with the aid of his acoustic guitars, the magic of multi-tracks, his occasional vocals, and the accompaniment of bassist José Marino. A truly un-plugged performance recorded to captivate the live sound of his string instrument in duet with a bass minus the customary addition of percussion or other instruments, the CD includes 11 original compositions with a bonus reprise of the title selection Spanish Nights. From the sounds of nuevo-flamenco-inspired pieces to jazz oriented musical passages to more festive Caribbean and Latin American rhythms, there's a whole world of music in this production rendered exclusively on string instruments and by only two musicians. NORMAN HEDMAN'S TROPIQUE
Taken By Surprise
(Palmetto)
One of the most identifiable traits of a Latin jazz artist is how he or she cooks together the two musical idioms that make-up this African-derived hybrid. The search for the perfect combination has given jazz-Latin fusion refreshing textures that compliment the traditional rhythm section of congas-timbales-bongó. On Taken by Surprise, percussionist/bandleader Norman Hedman furthers that with a combo of driving Afro-Cuban beats with sweet flute-vibes frosting as its primary flavors. With a cast of seasoned jazz and Latino cats from the Washington D.C. area, the musicianship is superb and collectively produces exquisite aromas with practically all-original material. Pa'Bailar gives you a taste as the drummers "rompen cuero" (rip skins) on an energizing uptempo descarga. Norman is steady as a rock throughout on congas with Willie MartÃnez laying down super riffs on the pailas. Props to A.J. Mantos (vibes), Craig Rivers (flute) and the rotating saxophonists including Ahmad Alladeen (soprano). George Cables guests and brings a laid back but artistically rich presence to Light at the End of the Tunnel and Rags to Riches. On this latest release the Jamaican-born Hedman shows that he and his group have matured into master chefs of contemporary Latin jazz and artists raising the qualitative standard of this musical art form. VIEJA TROVA SANTIAGUERA
Pura Trova: The Best of Vieja Trova Santiaguera & Live and Rare Tracks
(Nube Negra)
