JOSÉ "FURITO" RIOS
The Time 6:38
(SR Records)
(The Act Company)
American jazz and Spanish Flamenco share a beautiful trajectory that dates back to the 1960s and includes such artistic milestones as Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain, Charles Mingus' Ysabels Table Dance, John Coltrane's Ole, Chick Corea's Spain and the stunning collaboration by Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia -A Friday Night in San Francisco. Now add to that list Jazzpaña II, an all-star effort by guitarist Gerardo Nuñez and pianist Chano DomÃnguez at the helm, demonstrating with a luminary cast of friends how organically ingrained these two idioms are.
With special guests Michael Brecker (tenor sax), Jorge Pardo (flute/soprano sax) and Fareed Haque (guitar), the repertoire consists of ten mostly original pieces composed by Nuñez and DomÃnguez that breathe with gypsy passion and deep jazz knowledge. Calima is a bright Mediterranean-tinged opener highlighting the guitar wonders of Nuñez with a reed section of Brecker, Pardo and Perico Sambeat on alto sax adding icing on an already rich cake. The production swings from octet settings that melt to duets and trios in fascinating combinations to intriguing musical layers and angles that surprise the listener.
The artistry of pianist Chano DomÃnguez is obvious with an improvisational sensibility that is saying what it needs to say with technical prowess, jazz harmonic ideas and his own Spanish roots. Alma de Mujer, Mister Señor, and Para Chick are samba-flavored tunes that resonate with the influence of Chick Corea and Chucho Valdés. His duet with Esperanza Fernández is passionate and on Gil Evan's Blues for Pablo, classical roots surge forward on the darker, moodier tonal arrangement.
This follow-up to the acclaimed 1993 Jazzpaña debut that featured the big band work of Vince Mendoza is a refreshing new perspective of the Flamenco jazz continuum. Driven by a superb generational cast, producer Siegfried Loch and co-producer Tino Di Geraldo (who also plays trap drums and percussion on the date) bring to the forefront two leading talents to produce a masterful work that shows that as an international language, jazz continues to build bridges between cultures.
CHOCO ORTA
La Reina Del Sabor
(Musical Productions)
Recomendado.
L.A. CARPOOL
Havana Taxi
(L.A. Carpool Music)
Back cruising the diamond lanes of California's freeways is the group L.A. Carpool, enjoying the release of their latest CD production Havana Taxi. Providing a refreshing blend of salsa, rock and R&B music, L.A. Carpool features some of Los Angeles' foremost musicians along for an incredible musical ride. The bilingual (English/Spanish) lyrics of the cover and opening track Havana Taxi (a funky montuno) set the stage for this west coast-style party CD. The tracks Salsa Inferno and Por TÃ bring the salsa dancing magic to this production that highlight the vocal talents of both Faith Rivera and Frank GarcÃa. The group does a commendable job in covering the classic Steely Dan composition Do It Again, featuring the "killer" guitar work of Frank GarcÃa. They also bring back the classic composition Linda Chicana from the mid-seventies, featuring on piano the talents of noted jazz musician Mark Levine. America is a dainty up-beat nuevo-flamenco composition, (one of my favorites) which confirms the musical diversity of L.A. Carpool.
