A true Caribbean artist, born in the Dominican Republic, raised in Puerto Rico, and later moving on to New York City to pursue a career as a salsa singer, José Alberto "El Canario" did indeed accomplish his goal. With over 20 years in the Latin music scene and 15 solo recording productions to his credit, "El Canario" is still going strong, and this new CD, Herido (Heartbreak), justifies just how strong. Relishing his relationship with a new label (RykoLatino), he feels he has accomplished access to that next level in his musical career. Herido features a reinvigorated veteran singer, displaying an enticing array of new rhythms with old values and the unmistakable voice of "El Canario," in summary, a powerful hard driven danceable delight and one of his foremost productions of all times. Me dejá picao, a hard swinging salsa, sets the pace for more burning surprises like Vete y pregona, and Enamorado de mi pais. He also does a good job of covering the Spanish rock group Maná's hit composition Clavado en un bar (a reggae meets cumbia after a hard night inspired beat), and on Marco Antonio Soils' composition Adonde vayas. There is a lot of good music to enjoy in this commendable new CD from José Alberto "El Canario." (RM)
