Last month pianist Dave Brubeck celebrated his 80th birthday by performing with his quartet and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl on August 16. A native Californian, Dave Brubeck first began performing in the late 1940s. With a career spanning more than half a century, Brubeck is one of the most honored names in the jazz world. Happy B-Day, Mr. Brubeck.
The 4th Annual Latin Jazz Festival Con Ritmo y Sabor is scheduled for September 2, 2000, at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. This year's eclectic lineup is headed by Chico O'Farrill and his Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Banal. Also performing in the festival are Willie Colón and his orchestra, McCoy Tyner and the Latin Jazz All Stars, Cuba's Bobby Carcasses and Columna B., New York City's Son Boricua, plus the All-City Latin Jazz Student Ensemble from Berklee College of Music. This year's event honors the legendary Chico O'Farrill. The event starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by phone and on-line at Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) and the Greek Theatre box office.
World Festival 2000 will be held on Sunday, September 10, at the Hollywood Bowl, celebrating the music of Brazil. Heading the event will be Jorge Ben Jor and Daniela Mercury. Show time is at 7 p.m.
Albert Torres Productions presents direct from Cuba, Pachito Alonso y sus Kinikini on Friday, September 22. On Friday, October 6, direct from New York, singer Hermán Olivera and Johnny Polanco's Conjunto Amistad; on Friday, October 20, from New York, Tito Nieves y su Orquesta, and on Thursday, November 2, Orquesta Aragón from Cuba, all at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City. The Second Annual Ritmo Latino Music Awards 2000/ El Premio de la Gente will take place on Thursday, October 19, at 8 p.m. at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. Performing artists include Son by Four, Chayanne, Emmanuel, A.B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia Kings, Jaci Velásquez, Pedro Fernández, Bertin Osbone, Paulina Rubio, Saul Hernández, Jaguares and Charlie Zaa. In a recent press conference, Ritmo Latino announced the names of the 70 nominees for this year's awards. The nominees were selected on the basis of SoundScan, Inc.'s report on record sales from July 1999 to June 2000. Awards in 14 categories include the genres of Pop, Ranchera, Tejano, Regional Mexican, Salsa, Merengue, Rock en Español, Video, and Song and Artist of the Year. The public was invited to vote for their favorite artists between August 9 and September 12, 2000, through ballots available in all Vons supermarkets and Ritmo Latino record stores. Tickets for the event are available through all TicketMaster outlets and Ritmo Latino stores.
Live music and dancing can be enjoyed nightly throughout the city of Los Angeles. Check out El Floridita Restaurant in Hollywood on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for top local salsa bands and excellent food. The Conga Room on Wilshire Blvd. features top local entertainment plus major music acts Thursdays through Sunday. Club Atlas in Los Angeles features live music nightly and Latin nights every Thursday. Luna Park in the Westside features live acts and dining seven nights a week.
