OSCAR D'LEON
La Formula Original
(RMM)
Oscar D'Leon, The pride of Venezuela, "El Soneto del Mundo" releases his latest CD titled La Formula Original (The Original Formula). Recording his first tropical dance hit song in the early seventies, Llorarás, D'Leon immediately ascended in popularity asa bonafide salsero. His ability to continue to produce hits throughout the seventies into the eighties earned hmo international fame and the title of "El Sonero del Mundo" (The sonero of the world). But with fame carne many concerts, tours and engagements for D'Leon, creating an exaggerated work schedule for the superstar of salsa. By the early nineties he continues to be one of the top salsa acts around the world but his recording started to lack some of that bit making quality. His incredibly versatile talents asa bandleader, composer, musician, and singer, keep him in the limelight regardless of not producing as many hits as he used to. This new CD is perhaps the solution to the problem. Oscar goes back to his old way of making music by selecting his own compositions, arranging most of it himself, and basically controlling his production and not leaving it up to the label. The result is that La Formula Original is his best work of this decade. The old Oscar is back and ready to take on the airwaves and rock the dance floors once again.
SONIDO ISLEÑO
El Asunto
(Tresero)
radio chon
(Son Del Barrio)
Not since Los Lobos', Just Another Band From East L.A. has a Chicano band stirred up such a delicious Mexican-derived folkloric fusion. Anchored by Chris González Clarke on vocals and guitars and Mario Barrera Próspero (formerly of Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeño band) on vocals and drums, this debut by Los Otros (The Others) is BARRIO GOLD and joins a potent '90s list of Califas Chicano-Latino groove bands like Quetzal, Ozomatli, and Los Mocosos. With Los Lobo's César Rosas producing, we are treated to fine sonic qualities on the largely original songs, and the quintet carries it with talent. The title-track "radio chon," where if Marlon Brando gave them a million bucks they'd start an underground radio station, shows their creative roots, asa Cuban folkloric tres guitar layers over a scanning radio dial. The influence of the son, both Cuban and Jarocho from Veracruz, is potent with lead singer Russell RodrÃguez contributing a falsetto that will curl your roes. Los Otros are a refreshing addition to the local scene and part of a Bay Area label built by Justice Matters, a socio-political cultural organization where "la cultura cura!"
ELIADES OCHOA & CUARTETO PATRIA
Sublime Ilusión
(Higher Octave)
